Yesterday, the smart and generous people at The Leadership Network and Catalyst sponsored The NINES online conference. Over 100 speakers had six minutes to share their best 'game-changing' moments. Here’s mine.
The biggest communication challenge that nobody talks about…
The clutter we create when we overestimate what we have to say and underestimate how it’s going to affect the other person.
That’s right. The only time in MY LIFE I was asking for more copy was when I read The Pillars of the Earth.
What made this minimalist read a 1,000 page novel about cathedral architecture in medieval England and end up begging for more?
I never would have picked this book up on my own. Nothing about it’s title, description, genre, size — anything — appealed to my typical interest. But, I was badgered by my daughter. She wouldn’t let it go. I finally picked it up to make her happy, convinced she didn’t know what was good for me.
Boy, was I wrong.
Only a few pages in, and I could NOT put this book down. The whole thing took me by surprise. What made it such a GREAT STORY?
It brilliantly revealed the surprising value of history and tradition in today’s world
It exposed the human heart, story and sacrifice behind the bricks and construction
It wove realistic imagery to narrate the tension of complex relationships and competing values in private and public sectors
It connected the psychology of every human emotion, motive and action with gripping characters and overlapping storylines
I think this series is making a connection with people. Online viewers are 3x higher than last week and the highest since May 2009. Next week? Avatar. Can’t wait.
People are threatened by people different than them and by situations they don’t understand. They increase efforts to control the world, destroying it in the process.
Pride and conceit appear when people get comfortable. And, the church is full of two types people; those who are set in their ways and those who aren’t. I am encouraged and motivated to change the world by embracing change.
Kem's hubby Mark, her family & friends have planned a crazy weekend for her. We want to surprise her every possible chance we get! She has been such a great friend & mentor to so many, that it was easy to get people involved in pulling off a magical weekend for her.
Kem's hubby has notified me that she has gone dark. Poor thing. She has a hard enough time turning of her phone for a 2 hour writing period. She must be going crazy right now. She'll be shocked to find out we've highjacked her blog & twitter account to promote her birthday celebrations.
Take a moment & leave a comment wishing her a HAPPY BIRTHDAY. Or even better, put a post on your own blog with birthday wishes (maybe include your fav. memory of her). Feel free to include video or pictures as well!!
If you publish a blog post, insert your name & the link (not your blog link, the post's link) into the comment section below. That way the readers & Kem can click around easily to view everyone's posts. We don't want her to miss any of it.
This highjacked blog won't be revealed until the end of the weekend so twitter, blog, email everyone you know & have them cover Kem in some serious internet lovin'. I will be uploading pics, quotes, stories...whatever, to this blog & to her twitter account. Check them both often & comment as much as you like on either network. We want to get at least 100 comments on her blog.
Here is her weekend schedule. She has no idea...everything's a surprise. So feel free to show up anywhere. She will get a kick out of it.
Here's is her weekend schedule:
